After pregnancy, significant weight loss, or aging, the abdominal muscles can weaken and skin in the area can become loose and saggy. In such cases, the board-certified plastic surgeons at Cosmetic Surgery Associates of New York can enhance and refine your appearance through abdominoplasty, often called a tummy tuck. At our practice in Westchester County, NY, we can both tighten your abdominal muscles and smooth the skin around your abdomen, leaving you with a flat, smooth midsection.

What’s New

When skin laxity and muscle weakness are confined to the lower part of the abdomen, a modified abdominoplasty, or “mini tummy tuck,” that limits tissue removal and muscle repair to the area below the navel may be recommended. This more limited procedure leaves a shorter scar but does not provide as much improvement as a traditional tummy tuck. Whatever technique is recommended for you, the goal of the procedure is a firmer, flatter abdomen.

The CSANY Difference

The surgeons at Cosmetic Surgery Associates of New York want your tummy tuck to be as successful as possible. In many cases, people who are unhappy with the appearance of their midsection also have other cosmetic concerns about their body. Our surgeons will focus on the “total package” of your cosmetic needs so that your tummy tuck is complemented by a completely beautiful you.

Good Tummy Tuck Candidates

Men and women consider getting tummy tucks to remedy excess skin hanging from the abdomen. Tummy tuck patients are often women who have finished having children or individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight. Good candidates for a tummy tuck also have the following things in common:

  • In good overall health
  • At or near their target weight
  • Are committed to maintaining the results by remaining active and eating a nutritious diet

If you are considering a future pregnancy, it’s a good idea to hold off on tummy tuck surgery until you are finished having children.

Procedure Overview

During your procedure, your tummy tuck surgeon will begin by creating a horizontal incision between your pelvic bones. Your incisions will be carefully placed so they are concealed by a bikini or underwear. During the procedure, excess skin and fat will be removed. To remove skin around the upper abdomen, an incision around the navel will need to be created. After this, your surgeon will tighten the underlying abdominal muscles to create a toned appearance. Typically after your procedure, you will be given a compression garment to wear for a few weeks in order to retain your new shape.

For those who experience excess sagging and laxity primarily in the lower abdominal region, we offer a mini tummy tuck, which targets that area specifically. Advantages of this procedure include smaller incisions and the belly button stays intact.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

Our tummy tuck patients receive detailed instructions to help their recoveries go as smoothly as possible. Patients return home with surgical drains that help remove fluid from the incision area and a compression garment that fits snuggly around the abdomen. Although each person’s recovery timetable is unique, there are some general guidelines to keep in mind following your surgery:

Plan ahead. Make sure you have help around the house, especially during the first couple of weeks following the procedure. A tummy tuck usually involves tightening the core abdominal muscles that are used in most movements. The first week is usually the most challenging, and then you’ll gradually feel stronger. Plan to avoid heavy lifting for at least a month, and make sure you have comfortable clothing, nutritious foods, and other items you need.

Walk when possible. Although we encourage patients to get plenty of rest, it’s also important to gently walk around the house beginning the day you return home. Walking helps reduce swelling and aids in the healing process.

Take time off. If you work outside the home, take at least 2 weeks off. If your job is more physically demanding, additional time may be necessary.

Wait on the gym. Postpone any exercising that causes you to sweat for 4 to 6 weeks. Ease back into a normal workout routine, and take more time if needed.

Follow your surgeon’s instructions. Recovery following a tummy tuck can be a challenge, but the chances of complications drop significantly for patients who follow all their postoperative instructions. Our surgeons provide you with plenty of guidance that is customized to your needs.

Common Questions

What happens to my belly button during the procedure?

Your surgeon creates an incision around the navel to allow for adequate removal of excess fat and skin, particularly of the upper abdomen. By moving the umbilicus, your surgeon can create a tighter midsection and even improve the appearance of your navel if necessary.

Will there be scars after my procedure?

Unfortunately, scars are a reality of any surgical procedure. However, the surgeons at Cosmetic Surgery Associates of New York create inconspicuous incisions whenever possible that can be concealed by a bikini or underwear. Most women feel that the scar is worth the beautiful results of the procedure. Also keep in mind that the scar should continue to fade over time and become much less noticeable.

Can a tummy tuck be combined with another procedure?

Depending on the amount of fat to be removed, liposuction can be performed with a tummy tuck to enhance results. Also, a popular option for moms who have experienced significant sagging in the abdomen and breasts is a tummy tuck combined with breast augmentation or a breast lift. This combination procedure is known by many as the mommy makeover.

How much does a tummy tuck cost?

As with most plastic surgery procedures, the cost of a tummy tuck at our New York practice varies based on several factors, including fees charged for the operating room and other medical specialists involved with the operation. The cost also depends heavily on the patient’s specific needs and whether other procedures, such as liposuction, are being performed during the same operation. Because each procedure is so customized to the patient’s precise needs, it’s difficult to provide a cost without a consultation. Our practice firmly believes in keeping costs affordable to open access to all our deserving patients. Read more about our financing options, and contact us to get a specific quote.

Will a tummy tuck get rid of stretch marks?

Stretch marks are a common concern for women after pregnancy. Fortunately, a tummy tuck removes most stretch marks below the belly button. Even the stretch marks that are above the belly button will be lower after the tummy tuck surgery tightens your abdominal skin. Tummy tuck surgery can also move or eliminate some C-section scars. Morpheus8 treatments are effective for softening the appearance of both stretch marks and scars.
