What’s New

The surgeons at Cosmetic Surgery Associates of New York were the first in Westchester County to use Smartlipo® laser-assisted liposuction. Smartlipo is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional liposuction that uses a laser to help liquefy fat cells. Because this liposuction uses laser energy, the fat is easier to remove and the procedure itself causes less damage to the surrounding tissues and nerves. Smartlipo also has the additional benefit of a faster recovery time when compared with other liposuction methods.

The CSANY Difference

Even with our years of experience performing liposuction, we are continually educating ourselves and reevaluating our techniques to ensure we provide our patients with the finest care available. Every procedure we undertake is performed in our private, fully accredited plastic surgery facility. You can be confident in the knowledge that your liposuction will be performed by a highly experienced surgeon in a facility featuring the latest equipment. Our facility offers the same amenities, including the same patient monitoring devices, found in some of the finest hospital operating rooms.

Good Liposuction Candidates

Liposuction is an excellent body contouring procedure with a proven track record for patients who are good candidates. It’s important to remember that liposuction is not weight loss surgery. Good liposuction candidates share a few common qualities:

  • Physically healthy
  • Little excess, loose skin
  • Good skin elasticity
  • At or near their target weight

Common Treatment Areas

Our surgeons use liposuction to reduce bothersome localized fat from most areas, which include:

  • Face and neck including the cheeks, jowls, and under the chin (double chin)
  • Breasts or chest
  • Upper arms
  • Abdomen, waist, and hips
  • Inner and outer thighs

Some patients may decide to get nonsurgical fat reduction through CoolSculpting®. The results develop gradually and aren’t as dramatic as with liposuction, but there is no downtime following a CoolSculpting treatment session.

Procedure Overview

At Cosmetic Surgery Associates of New York, our surgeons typically perform liposuction while you are under general anesthesia. Once you are fully anesthetized, your surgeon makes one or more tiny incisions near your desired treatment area. Whenever possible, our surgeons make incisions in areas where the body’s natural creases and contours hide any potential scarring.

Your surgeon then inserts a long, thin tube called a cannula through these incisions. Your surgeon guides powerful laser energy toward your unwanted fat cells, loosening and melting them to ease removal. The cannula, which is connected to a vacuum pressure unit and guided by your surgeon, suctions away fat. Your surgeon then closes your incisions with sutures.

When fat is physically removed from the body via liposuction, it doesn’t return. However, it’s important to remember that your remaining fat cells can still shrink and expand in relation to your diet and exercise habits. Therefore, it’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle even after liposuction in order to enjoy your results indefinitely.

“Smartlipo is versatile, and our patients have been very pleased with the results. The recovery is generally shorter than with traditional liposuction.” — Dr. Joshua Greenwald

Liposuction Recovery

Your experience recuperating after liposuction is highly dependent on the part of your body that was treated. Your surgeon explains in detail specific instructions to follow after the procedure. In general, recovery brings a few expected things for every patient:

  • A few days of soreness and discomfort
  • Wearing a special garment to minimize swelling
  • Taking up to a week off from work

Your surgeon prescribes pain relief medication that effectively manages any discomfort you experience.

Most liposuction patients feel well enough to return to work in about 1 week, although you may need to spend a bit more time at home depending on the physical requirements of your job. Some swelling is likely to persist for several weeks, but it shouldn’t interfere with your regular activities. As you heal, your surgeon will gradually clear you to resume more strenuous activities, including exercise.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much fat can be removed?

While liposuction can remove a substantial amount of fat, it is not designed to be a weight-loss procedure. Liposuction is ideal for removing localized fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. If you have excessive or hanging skin resulting from significant weight loss, post weight loss surgery may be an option.

Will the fat return after my liposuction procedure?

No. By the time you are an adult, you have all the fat cells you will ever have. When you gain or lose weight, these fat cells expand or contract. Liposuction removes fat cells, and once they are removed, they will not grow back. However, surrounding areas can still gain weight, so it’s important to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle to help your results last indefinitely.

Will liposuction tighten my skin?

Liposuction is not a skin tightening procedure, so patients should not expect to see improvement in cellulite or loose, lax skin. While Smartlipo is not a skin tightening procedure, it may improve the appearance of sagging or stretched skin by stimulating collagen production. If you have excess or stretched skin, a different body contouring procedure such as a tummy tuck may be a better fit for your needs.

How do I decide between liposuction and a tummy tuck?

The abdomen is a common “trouble spot” for a lot of patients, and many people wonder whether liposuction or a tummy tuck would work for them. To simplify it, this decision really comes down to the matter of extra skin. Many people have loose, sagging skin around their abdomens, especially after pregnancy or weight loss. A tummy tuck reduces this skin and can also repair weakened or displaced abdominal muscles.

Liposuction, however, treats only unwanted fat. Therefore, if your only concern is an unwanted bulge or roll, liposuction alone may be sufficient. On the other hand, if you desire a more comprehensive improvement of your entire abdomen, a tummy tuck is more likely to give you the results you want. We often combine the 2 treatments into a single procedure that treats both fat and excess skin. You can determine which is better for you during a consultation with one of our surgeons.

Do men ever have liposuction?

Yes. Many men see us for liposuction, especially of their abdomens and flanks. Liposuction appeals to men because it requires relatively little downtime compared with other types of cosmetic procedures, and the compression garments required after surgery are easy to conceal beneath most everyday clothing.

How long will it take before I can go back to the gym?

The length of time you’ll need to avoid strenuous exercise depends on the specifics of your liposuction. For example, minor liposuction of the face or neck may require only about a week of reduced activity, while liposuction of the abdomen, arms, or legs necessitates up to 6 weeks out of the gym for healthy healing. As you plan your surgery, we give you a much more specific idea of what you can expect in the days, weeks, and months following your procedure.

Should I get CoolSculpting® or liposuction?

CoolSculpting is an effective liposuction alternative for the right patients. The nonsurgical fat reduction treatment can tone trouble spots such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, and under the chin. Because it doesn’t require any incisions, CoolSculpting is a no-downtime procedure that often takes only an hour or less to complete. However, while CoolSculpting can provide very focused results on a specific area, it can’t match the results you can get from liposuction. Your surgeon will discuss body contouring options in more detail during your consultation.

Will I need to be under general anesthesia during a Smartlipo® procedure?

The type of anesthetic needed during liposuction depends on a number of factors, so it’s difficult to say for sure before your consultation. Broadly speaking, Smartlipo can be performed using a local anesthetic if the target area is small, but a general anesthetic is usually recommended if multiple areas of the body are being treated.
