At Cosmetic Surgery Associates of New York, breast reduction can be a life-enhancing experience that has a dramatically positive impact on a woman’s health and self-esteem. For insurance purposes, breast reduction is at times considered a reconstructive procedure, due to the fact that greatly oversized breasts may interfere with normal function and can lead to severe back problems. However, one cannot overlook the cosmetic component of the procedure: breast reduction surgery can vastly improve the shape of the breasts as well.

If you would like to find out more about breast reduction surgery at any of our New York locations, request a complimentary consultation online or contact us at (914) 761-8667. Our surgeons look forward to helping you achieve your reconstructive and cosmetic goals.

What’s New

New breast reduction techniques involve using liposuction to reduce the size of large, heavy or sagging breasts. Your surgeon will make a small incision in either the armpit or in the crease under the breast. Through this incision, the doctor will insert a long, narrow tube called a cannula, which will be used to break up fatty tissues. Once the excess fat has been removed, the breast size will be decreased and the surrounding skin will eventually shrink to fit its new contours. Though this technique cannot be used to achieve substantial reduction in breast volume, it can provide relief for many women while leaving only two small, inconspicuous scars in appropriately selected patients.

The CSANY Difference

We’ve personally seen the amazing lifestyle changes that are possible with this procedure. Having large, heavy breasts can bring about many negative and unwanted problems. Breasts that are in proportion with the rest of your body can enhance your self-image as well as improve your physical health. We are committed to helping women enjoy beautiful body contours and decreased physical complications through breast reduction surgery.

Procedure Overview

At our practice, breast reduction is performed by removing excess breast tissue and skin, and repositioning the nipple and areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple) to ensure that they sit in a natural position. Then the remaining breast tissue is reshaped. Breast reduction can be performed any time after the breasts have finished developing. We frequently recommend the procedure to young women who are in the early stages of the physical and emotional complications associated with having excessively large breasts.

Depending on the amount of tissue and skin to be removed, your breast reduction surgeon in New York at the Cosmetic Surgery Associates of New York can employ different incision techniques including the lollipop (incision around the areola and down the breast vertically) and anchor (around the areola, down the breast and along the breast crease). The incision patterns are similar to those of a breast lift, with the difference being that a reduction procedure removes more breast tissue while improving breast shape. In general, the procedure takes around 4 to 5 hours to perform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is breast reduction covered by insurance?

This depends on the insurer; however, it is typically either fully or partially covered. Oftentimes insurance companies require documentation from you as well as your surgeon indicating that your large breasts cannot be reduced with diet and exercise alone. We will help you with insurance paperwork to ensure that, if you do qualify, your breast reduction surgery will be covered to the fullest extent possible.

Will I need breast lift surgery in addition to my reduction?

Most women considering a breast reduction can also benefit from lifting the breast and nipple. This will provide a more youthful appearance. Because the nipple and breast mound are moving to a higher position, there is no need for a separate breast lift surgery – the procedures will be performed simultaneously.

Will I lose nipple sensation?

In most cases, nipple sensation returns to normal. The incidence of partial or complete loss of nipple sensation are each approximately 10% following breast lift or breast reduction surgery. While there is no way to predict which patients will have impaired nipple sensation following breast reduction or breast lift surgery, we have found that large breast reductions and lifting very droopy, ptotic breasts increase the likelihood of impaired nipple sensation postoperatively. Similarly, smaller breast reduction and breast lift procedures will often leave nipple sensation unimpaired. Our surgeons strive to preserve breast and nipple sensation and are able to do so in the vast majority of cases. Most women who undergo breast reduction retain the ability to breastfeed following the operation. The risks of breast reduction surgery will be discussed in detail during your consultation at Cosmetic Surgery Associates of New York.
