Chemical Peel

Fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth and on the forehead and cheek areas may be improved with a wide range of skin treatments. One of the most effective methods is the chemical peel. Women and men interested in a chemical peel in New York can benefit from 3 different formulations that vary in strength depending on the degree of improvement needed. Chemical peels can remove fine lines, uneven pigmentation, wrinkles and age spots.

What's New

During your chemical peel treatment near New York City, a solution that gently peels away the top layer of the skin is applied to areas in need of rejuvenation. Peel solutions may contain alpha hydroxy acids, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or phenol as the peeling agent, depending on the depth of your wrinkles and your skin type. Several light- to medium-depth peels can often achieve similar results to one deeper peel treatment while being less invasive and requiring a shorter recovery time.

Procedure Overview

Alpha hydroxy acids are derived from foods such as fruits and milk, and can improve the texture of skin by removing layers of dead cells and encouraging cell regeneration. There may be little or no down time after a treatment with this type of light chemical peel.

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is used for peeling your face, neck, hands and other exposed areas of the body. This treatment is great for "spot" peeling of specific areas. It can be used for light, medium or deep peeling, depending on the concentration and method of application.

Phenol is sometimes used for full-face peeling when sun damage or wrinkling is severe. It can also be used to treat limited areas of your face, such as deep wrinkles around your mouth. A "buffered" phenol peel offers yet another option for severely sun-damaged skin and may be a good choice for some of our New York chemical peel patients who want a deep peel with a somewhat faster recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is recovery like?

Recovery time from a chemical peel procedure will depend on the depth of peel you receive. It is a general rule of thumb that the deeper the peel, the longer the recovery time will be. During recovery, once your skin has peeled you can start to wear makeup. Your skin will continue to improve over the next several months after your chemical peel.

How do I moisturize my skin after my chemical peel?

It is recommended that petroleum jelly be used after a TCA peel in order to fully moisturize the skin. It may be necessary to moisturize several times a day while healing. Because moist skin heals faster than dry skin, keeping the area lubricated is important in healing fast and ensuring beautiful results.

How long do the results of a chemical peel last?

The depth of the peel as well as the amount of downtime spent after the procedure should be indicative of how long the peel will last. A deep peel may last several months and even up to years. However, results from a chemical peel will vary between individuals.
