Why Labiaplasty?

Women who have enlarged or elongated labia can experience a wide range of problems that can inhibit them from living comfortably and without embarrassment.  Aside from general discomfort, women may find that enlarged labia may make wearing tight-fitting pants, bathing suits, or spandex uncomfortable while participating in athletic activities may prove to be difficult and even painful. Elongated or enlarged labia can also negatively affect sexual activity, leading to sexual inhibition and embarrassment.

The Labiaplasty Procedure

The labiaplasty procedure performed at our Westchester and White Plains-area practice is a relatively simple, quick surgery. After placing the patient under local or general anesthesia, one of our surgeons creates incisions in order to sculpt the labia. The surgeon shapes the labia by shortening or removing areas of excessive or unwanted labial tissue.  The locations of the incisions, which are sutured closed, will depend largely on the patient's unique anatomy. A typical labiaplasty operation takes between 30 and 45 minutes.

Recovery from Labiaplasty

Following the labiaplasty procedure, patients will be given pain medications. The sutures used to close up the incisions typically dissolve within 10 days. Most patients are able to resume most normal activities and may even be able to return to work within two to five days; however, patients are advised to abstain from sexual activity for three to six months following the labiaplasty procedure.
