At the Cosmetic Surgery Associates of Westchester, breast augmentation is typically performed to enlarge underdeveloped or small breasts as well as breasts that have decreased in size following weight loss or pregnancy. Breast augmentation can also make your breasts more symmetrical if one breast is oblong or larger than the other.

Augmentation is accomplished in our Westchester County facility by surgically inserting an implant behind each breast. Breast implants are filled with a sterile saltwater (saline) solution. The most common site for the breast implants to be inserted is the crease just underneath your breast. This allows any scarring left by the small incision to effectively blend into the breast’s natural fold. Other possible incision sites are the armpit and the edges of the areola (the pink skin surrounding the nipple).

A small pocket is created for the breast implant in one of two places: either behind your breast tissue or behind the muscle between your breast and chest wall. In most cases we find it more advantageous to place the breast implant behind the muscle because it results in a very natural look. In addition, this method will make mammograms easier to read in the future.

What's New

For the first time in fourteen years, the FDA has approved silicone gel-filled breast implants for use by specially trained surgeons. Silicone gel-filled breast implants may be used on women who are at least 22 years old. All surgeons at Cosmetic Surgery Associates of Westchester are approved to use these implants and are happy to offer them to appropriate patients. These new generation silicone-filled implants are made of a proprietary silicone gel formulation that holds its shape but remains soft, resulting in a more natural look and feel.
